What we do
An upright piano runs 300 to 500 lb. A baby grand starts around 500 and a full concert grand can pass 1,000. The weight sits high, it is not evenly distributed, and the case is thin wood over a cast-iron plate - so a piano that gets dropped an inch does not bounce, it cracks.
That is why this is a specialist job rather than a job for extra hands on moving day. The damage from getting it wrong is rarely the piano alone: it is the door frame, the stair nosing, the hardwood, and occasionally somebody's back.
We move pianos with the right equipment and a crew that has done it before, and the same applies to everything else in the house that is heavier than it looks.
